These crispy onion straws go perfectly as a side dish, appetizer, or part of a main dish. They only require a few ingredients, and are so delicious and addicting!

Crispy Onion Straws Recipe

  • 1 Large Onion cut into very thin slices
  • 1-2 cups of buttermilk
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 tablespoon of paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon of pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon of salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon of cumin
  • 1/2 tablespoon of garlic powder
  • Oil for frying


  • Add the sliced onions to a bowl and cover with the buttermilk.
  • Let soak for 15-20 minutes at least.
  • Heat your oil.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients.
  • Take a few spoonfuls of the onions at a time and coat in the flour mixture.
  • Remove and add to the hot oil, frying until golden brown.
  • Pat dry with a paper towel.
